THE SELECTION GRAMMAR
WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
A vocabulary nobody can select from is a vocabulary that loses to a rectangle. Name the act you are making — asserting, showing support, declining, taking apart, performing, moving on — and the form follows from it.
How do I choose which HAUSE form to use?
Start from the act, not the shape. Are you asserting something, showing what holds it up, declining to assert, taking an object apart, showing something happen, or moving the reader on? Each act selects a form, and each form carries the test that tells it from its neighbour — a Claim owes evidence where a Statement carries the room; Evidence shows receipts where Agreement shows independent authorities agreeing. All 35 forms are reachable this way, or the build fails.
Name the act. The shape follows from it.
TRY THE IDEA / FOUR CHOICES
What should the interface do?
CLAIM / ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
State a belief and make its current status visible.
CLAIM
These headphones last around forty hours on a charge.
A fictional product claim. The status tells a reader it still needs support.
EVIDENCE / ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
Show the measurement, its method and its limits.
EVIDENCE
Battery test
Example data: 38.5 hours across two units under lab conditions. A measurement with a scope, not a promise for every listener.
REFUSAL / ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
Name what is missing and decline to invent the answer.
THE LIMIT
NOT SUBSTANTIATED
requested recyclable materials
available an unverified supplier statement
There is not enough evidence to make this claim.
not substantiated — requested recyclable materials; available an unverified supplier statement. There is not enough evidence to make this claim.
COMPARISON / ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
Keep the same object visible while changing how it is understood.
ONE PRODUCT / TWO PRIORITIES
THE SAME HEADPHONES
- Battery life first
- Comfort over long journeys
THE SAME HEADPHONES — as for travel: battery life first, comfort over long journeys. As for long-term ownership: repairability first, replaceable parts.
AI already chooses what to say. HAUSE gives it a vocabulary for choosing how that meaning should appear.
YOU ARE SAYING SOMETHING
The move is an assertion. What separates them is not tone — it is what the sentence owes.
Making the point the room is about
→ StatementWould a reader quote this line if they quoted one line?
CLAIM INSTEAD — the assertion owes evidence, and should carry a status mark
OBSERVATION INSTEAD — you are describing what is there rather than what it means
Asserting something you believe and must defend
→ ClaimCould this be shown false? Does it need a status — open, supported, refuted?
STATEMENT INSTEAD — the line is a turn in the argument rather than a testable belief
Reporting what is actually there, before what it means
→ ObservationCan you name the thing being observed in three words? That label is the form.
CLAIM INSTEAD — you have moved from noticing to arguing
Answering the question a reader would type
→ AnswerIs there a forty-to-a-hundred-word paragraph a stranger could lift whole and still be right?
STATEMENT INSTEAD — you want the claim at display size rather than the plain answer beneath it
Opening the room and saying which room it is
→ HeroIs this the first thing on the page? A second Hero is a second chapter, and probably a second URL.
Quoting someone else, verbatim
→ ExcerptAre these words yours? If they are not, they keep their own markdown, their source and their trims.
SNIPPET INSTEAD — the quoted thing is code or terminal output rather than prose
YOU ARE SHOWING WHAT HOLDS IT UP
Evidence is not decoration and not a table of wins. These forms all exist to make a claim checkable by someone who does not trust you.
Showing the findings behind a claim
→ EvidenceDoes at least one row refute something? A list with no failures is advertising.
CLAIM INSTEAD — you are stating the belief rather than the receipts
Showing that independent authorities agree
→ AgreementAre there N values derived separately that must be identical — and would a mismatch be a named failure?
EVIDENCE INSTEAD — the findings are different facts rather than the same fact checked twice
Showing how a value was arrived at
→ DerivationDoes the value fold down a graded scale by caps, so nobody had to assert the result?
EVIDENCE INSTEAD — the number was measured rather than derived
Showing the code or output itself
→ SnippetIs this verbatim, and would paraphrasing it be a lie?
Saying when this was published, and what it was built from
→ ProvenanceDoes this page make a claim someone might need to date?
Letting someone cite you
→ CitationIs this a published object — something a reader could reference in their own work?
PROVENANCE INSTEAD — you are showing the record behind the work rather than the reference to it
YOU ARE DECLINING, OR LEAVING IT OPEN
The moves most systems have no vocabulary for — which is why systems without them guess.
Declining to assert something
→ RefusalIs this the system working correctly by not answering? Then it is not an error state.
QUESTION INSTEAD — nobody is refusing anything — the matter is simply unresolved
Leaving something unresolved, at full size
→ QuestionWould burying this in a roadmap be more comfortable than printing it? Print it.
Showing which alternatives exist, and refusing the absent one
→ VariantsAre these physically present forms of one identity — and does asking for a missing one deserve a designed refusal?
COMPARISON INSTEAD — the two things are interpretations rather than alternatives of one identity
Showing what has to be true before the next step
→ LadderIs each rung closed by its own criterion, in order, with no rung skippable?
TIMELINE INSTEAD — you are recording what happened rather than governing what may happen next
YOU ARE SHOWING WHAT SOMETHING IS MADE OF
The reader operates these. Each one takes an object apart in a different direction.
Cutting one object open and labelling its layers
→ AnatomyIs everything disclosed at once, with nothing behind a click?
DECOMPOSITION INSTEAD — the reader should take it apart step by step rather than see it opened
Taking one thing apart, step by step
→ DecompositionDoes the reader control the pace? If the explanation should carry them, it is Unfolding.
UNFOLDING INSTEAD — the parts should arrive on their own — identical props, performed
Showing a physical layout to scale
→ ByteMapDoes the width of each field on screen mean its width in the artifact?
Showing one subject at several depths, on one URL
→ LensAre the explanation, the object and the clause the same subject rather than three subjects?
ANATOMY INSTEAD — the depths are parts of one object rather than registers of one explanation
Showing a field where only a subset ever activates
→ ExpertFieldIs the point that most of it stays dormant, and which part lights depends on the input?
Showing a stream widened, judged, and brought back
→ GatingDoes the argument live in the widths — expand, judge channel by channel, compress?
Letting the reader query something real
→ TerminalIs there an executor behind this, answering for real? A recording of a terminal is a Film.
Showing the path between connected ideas
→ FollowRevealDoes each step carry the relation that brought it there?
CONNECTION INSTEAD — you only need the doors out of the chapter, not the shape of the path
YOU ARE SHOWING SOMETHING HAPPENING
These play themselves, and rest on a designed final state — which is what a reader with reduced motion, or no JavaScript, actually receives.
Showing one object read two ways
→ ComparisonShould the reader drag between the interpretations themselves?
TRANSFORMATION INSTEAD — the change should perform itself — identical props, its cinematic sibling
Performing a change between two states of one thing
→ TransformationIs it a staged swap rather than a crossfade? Two physical forms of one object never dissolve into each other.
COMPARISON INSTEAD — the pace belongs to the reader
Letting the parts of a thing arrive on their own
→ UnfoldingSame props as Decomposition — is the reader watching rather than operating?
Showing many inputs compiled down to one output
→ CompilationDo the inputs lose their separateness by the end?
PROCESSION INSTEAD — one thing passes through stages and stays itself
Showing one thing pass through every stage in order
→ ProcessionIs it the same object at the end, having been somewhere?
Showing a scale nobody can hold in their head
→ MagnitudeDoes each arrival rescale the world — powers of ten rather than a bar chart?
Showing throughput against a fixed capacity
→ ChannelIs the constraint the conduit rather than the quantity?
Showing values snapped onto a lattice
→ QuantisationIs the loss the subject — what rounding actually does, rather than a claim about it?
Playing an actual film
→ FilmDoes a real film exist? If not, the library holds the form and shows nothing.
YOU ARE MOVING THE READER ON
Where a chapter ends, and how a history is told.
Ending the chapter and opening the next
→ ConnectionDoes the sentence raise the next chapter's question rather than summarise this one?
Telling what happened, in order
→ TimelineDoes every line carry a date? If they do not, this is prose, not a history.
PROVENANCE INSTEAD — the history belongs to one published object rather than to the subject
THE HARD PART IS NEVER FINDING THE FORM
It is telling two nearly-right forms apart, and the two hardest live one rung from each other: Comparison and Transformation take identical props and differ only in who sets the pace. That is not an accident of the catalogue — it is the one distinction the whole three-mode split turns on, so it is worth seeing rather than reading.
IDENTICAL PROPS — ONE DISTINCTION
the same two states of one object, offered two ways
- The reader, with their hand
- Drags between the interpretations
- Wherever they left it
- When the change is temporal, and they are being carried
the same two states of one object, offered two ways — as comparison — an instrument: the reader, with their hand, drags between the interpretations, wherever they left it, when the change is temporal, and they are being carried. As transformation — a performance: the author, at the hause stagger, watches a staged swap, never a crossfade, designed, and carrying the whole point, when the reader is studying rather than being led.
WHEN NOTHING HERE IS THE ACT YOU ARE MAKING
NO FORM ESTABLISHED
requested a semantic act the library does not hold
available 35 acts, each reachable from what you are doing
Build it in the page that needs it. It earns the library on the third rung, when a second exhibition needs the same act.

The catalogue, the failures that produced it, and the system answering in its own forms.
